Startup What? Watch recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for the Quotes, a smartwatch based on memes, primarily those found to be inspirational. Much like its name implies, the Quotes watch is largely focused on delivering a combination of words people deem moving and motivational, with the company stating its main mission is to infuse inspiration into people’s everyday lives in the form of tidbits. The device is equipped with an energy-efficient dot-matrix e-paper display panel that tells the time but is also used for delivering quotes based on people’s general preferences and habits.
The gadget comes with a dedicated mobile app for Android and iOS devices which is used for setting its behavior, allowing users to find their favorite quotes or discover new ones through a broad range of categories. Once you’re satisfied with your roster of quotes, you’re also able to set up rotation intervals, i.e. decide how frequently you want the smartwatch to change quotes. Users who favor quotes not found in the firm’s database or want to write their own sayings to display are also allowed to do so via the same mobile app, the startup said. The Quotes watch comes with limited messaging capabilities, allowing approved contacts to send you messages directly onto your wrist gadget. The device also supports real-time Twitter feeds which it can display and rotate in a similar manner. Fifteen fonts and a wide variety of style filters are part of the package, as are manual controls for browsing through quotes and other content displayed by the smartwatch.
A limited number of Kickstarter backers are able to order their Quotes units for as little as €75 ($93) a piece, with the Kickstarter campaign itself seeking the equivalent of just over $31,000 (€25,000). As of Wednesday morning PST, the project amassed over $10,500 in pledges from 77 backers and still has 28 days to go. The startup will be shipping the wearable internationally starting this October, as per its latest product roadmap.
