Samsung’s newly announced Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus utilize ModiFace Beauty AR technology, the Canadian company revealed earlier this week. The integration of the augmented reality solution is done through the smartphone’s artificial intelligent assistant Bixby and will allow owners of the new Android flagships to see how they look with various makeup configurations in real time. While the company’s Beauty AR platform has already been available for some time now, its Galaxy S9 implementation has been extensively optimized to take full advantage of Samsung’s latest ultra-premium mobile offerings. The virtual makeup applied to one’s face will be showcased at 30 frames per second, with the solution being capable of maintaining a consistent frame rate and promising to deliver realistic results backed by its library of accurately mapped shades from some of the world’s most famous cosmetic brands.
As it’s integrated into Bixby, the ModiFace Beauty AR platform can be accessed directly from the default Camera app of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. The exact list of supported cosmetic companies whose products will be featured by the service has yet to be disclosed but could be dynamic in nature and evolve over time as more brands join the project. ModiFace Chief Executive Officer Parham Aarabi suggested the AR solution has the potential to become the future of interactive advertising, allowing users to entertain themselves while simultaneously providing brands with new and creative ways to reach their potential customers. The functionality will be available out of the box and is expected to be ennobled with more content and capabilities going forward.
The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus place a large focus on AR applications, with Samsung specifically touting their support for AR Emoji, a combination of Snapchat’s Bitmoji and Apple’s Animoji which allows users to create digital avatars of themselves and animate them in order to share them with friends and family. The two Android flagships will officially become available for pre-orders tomorrow and are set to be released worldwide on March 16. Consumers who place advanced orders on either device are likely to receive them as early as next week, Samsung previously said.
