Samsung resolved a massive outage of its SmartThings platform affecting users in North America earlier this week, the company confirmed as part of an update to the status monitoring page of the service on Tuesday. The issues started manifesting themselves on Monday evening and first prevented SmartThings users in the United States from logging into the platform via its dedicated mobile app, with the problem encompassing both the Android and iOS versions of the service. The incident may not have affected all users but the majority of them are believed to have been unable to use the platform until after 9 PM PT on Monday, at which point Samsung managed to largely address the outage, having identified the cause of the issue, the company reported.
“A small subset” of SmartThings users in North America were unable to log into the IoT app until Tuesday morning, with the local division of the South Korean tech giant claiming everyone had normal access to the service ever since. Samsung apologized for the inconvenience but hasn’t elaborated on the background of the incident, with the circumstances that led to the massive outage remaining unknown. Besides the SmartThings mobile app, the outage is understood to have affected the browser version of the service as well. Some users are speculating the problem manifested due to Samsung‘s servers exceeding their capacity, though the firm hasn’t hinted at that or any other possibility. Users that still aren’t able to connect to their SmartThings hub are encouraged to contact the company’s support staff through traditional channels, though any current issues are unlikely to be related to the Monday outage.
Originally established in 2012 before being bought by Samsung for $200 million two years later, SmartThings is a developer of connected home technologies that’s been playing a crucial part in the Seoul-based firm’s IoT push. The Mountain View, California-based provider of home automation solutions recently unveiled the latest version of its app specifically designed for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, Samsung’s newest Android flagships scheduled to be officially released this Friday.
