Following last week’s reports about four new variants of Samsung’s Galaxy J3 coming to the U.S., yet another variant now appears to have been trademarked with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). What’s more, there’s a new trademark for a variant of the Korean tech giant’s Galaxy J7 series too, the Galaxy J7 Crown. The trademarks, for a Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit and Galaxy J7 Crown, were each filed on March 15 and are pending examination by the trademark authority – meaning that they still aren’t technically trademarked yet. However, there’s not much chance that either will be denied.Unsurprisingly, the trademarks are also both classified as “Standard Character Mark,” which means that the trademark applies regardless of font, color, or font size used. Obviously, since this is only a trademark filing, there really isn’t much else that can be gathered from the associated documents. Having said that, it may be possible to surmise what type of devices they will be based on Samsung’s history with its Galaxy J3 and Galaxy J7 family of handsets.
Interestingly, Samsung’s earlier variations on the Galaxy J3 family would seem to cover all of the bases, with regard to U.S. carriers. More directly, each already appears to have already gotten its own version of the Galaxy J3. So it’s very difficult to imagine why Samsung would be filing for a trademark for yet another variation of the same. The Galaxy J3 line of devices is generally considered to fall into the upper-budget side of things, while the J7 is ordinarily a slightly larger smartphone with moderately boosted specs. Current speculation surrounding the J3 devices that have already been unofficially named point to 2GB of RAM coupled with Samsung’s Exynos 7570 processor clocked at 1.43GHz. If the company follows previous conventions, that will be a quad-core SoC, though there are no guarantees that will be the case. Meanwhile, if the differences between the two lineups are the same as past variants, the Galaxy J7 may feature an octa-core SoC with a similar clock and will likely match it for RAM.
However, there are also often differences between the various versions of Samsung’s mid-to-low-range devices. The company has not, in fact, confirmed the existence of those aforementioned Samsung Galaxy J3 models either. So all of this speculation about a Galaxy J3 Orbit and Galaxy J7 Crown probably needs to be taken with an oversized pinch of salt.
