Speck Presidio Folio Case For Samsung Galaxy S9 Review

Speck has put out a number of cases for the Galaxy S9 already, and the Presidio Folio is one of the more interesting ones. Folio cases have become pretty popular in the past few years, so it’s not surprising to see Speck create one for the Galaxy S9 here, but what is interesting is how good it really is. Usually folio cases are good for working as a kickstand to stand your phone on its side to watch media and such, but the flap that covers the front can often times get in the way. That is still the case here, but it’s not as bad as with some other folio cases we’ve tried.

The Presidio Folio case is a two part case, and the other colors that Speck offers are two-toned (ours is the black on black model). There’s a plastic case that the Galaxy S9 does sit in, and then the rest of the case is the “folio” part of the case. It’s not quite plastic, but does have a rather nice feel to it. The Presidio Folio does have a thick bumper around the Galaxy S9, and that’s what makes it much thicker than some other Folio cases. This is to absorb impact. So that when the device is dropped, you don’t need to worry about the smartphone getting damaged at all. This is something that Speck actually builds into all of its cases, which is a really nice thing to have. Since most people do buy a case to protect their phone anyways.

This is a folio case, which means there is a pocket to stash away a credit card or two. Which is inside the case, where it can stay nice and safe. It does work pretty well, but don’t expect this to replace your wallet. The folio case does fold nicely into a stand, and makes it easy to watch videos on your smartphone using this case. This is great for taking on a flight or even on a long train ride. This is a third-party case for the Galaxy S9, so that means that unfortunately, the always-on display does not work with this case. Definitely unfortunate, but really not surprising either. Especially since this case is not clear at all. So if you were looking for your screen to be safe and secured, then this is a good case to grab.

Usability with this case can become an issue, since the front is going to be hanging down or folded against the back of the phone. The good thing is that it protects the camera from getting scratched, but does get in the way of using the fingerprint sensor for authentication or the camera for taking pictures. Which means you’ll need to leave it just hanging there, which is a bit odd for most people. But not too bad. There are cut outs on the bottom of the case for the USB-C port, speaker and the headphone jack. There is also one on the back for the camera and fingerprint sensor. The side buttons do not have cutouts, and that’s because of how thick the case is, but you can still feel for the buttons and press them when needed. They are a bit tough to press at first, but they do wear down a bit and become easier. But that also means no more accidental Bixby button activations. Which is always good news.

The Speck Presidio Folio Case is a great case for the Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9 Plus, and are priced at $44.95. Right now, these are only available from Speck’s online store, but should be making their way to Amazon in the very near future, which is going to be nice to see.
