Startup Xupo recently released its self-titled gadget that’s primarily a key finder but also promises to be capable of tracking any other item, having been designed as a highly portable locator beacon. The device is compatible with both Android and iOS smartphones and tablets, shipping with a companion app meant to serve as a tracking hub that doesn’t just allow you to locate any tagged object but also delivers a comprehensive location history of your items. The “British design” of the tracker is meant to be minimal and inconspicuous by placing function over form, with the Xupo coming in a circular body with a 35mm diameter that’s only 5mm thick. With a weight of 10g, the device is intended to be as compact as possible.
Despite its small form factor, the Xupo boasts a Bluetooth discovery range of approximately 50 meters outdoors and ten meters indoors, whereas it’s powered by a single CR2016 battery that’s said to be easily replaceable. One cell is also bundled with the device, allowing users to set it up within moments of getting their hands on it. The Xupo app for mobile devices that communicates with the tracker allows you to locate any tagged item with a single tap, drawing attention to it through a combination of LED flashes and buzzer ringing. Coupled with the robust mapping feature that allows you to check the last known location of any tagged item, the Xupo promises to serve as the ultimate tracking solution for “the Internet of your things.”
Besides allowing you to easily find tagged items with a mobile app, the Xupo also works the other way around, being able to ring your smartphone in case you lost track of it. The gadget is presently listed as being out of stock on Amazon UK but is expected to become available for purchase this spring, though it remains to be seen whether it eventually expands its availability to other markets.
