OnePlus on Monday officially confirmed the name of its upcoming Android flagship, having taken to Twitter to post a short OnePlus 6 teaser that can be seen below and claims the device will deliver “the speed you need.” The moniker of the handset has already been mentioned by a newly uncovered Wi-Fi Alliance certificate earlier today, though it’s presently unclear whether that particular sighting prompted the company to speed up its plans and disclose the name of the smartphone earlier than it originally intended to. The promotional message itself indicates OnePlus will be sticking with its OxygenOS-focused advertising in the near future and likely advertise the OnePlus 6 as the world’s fastest phone, possibly continuing with some of its signature PR stunts in the process of doing so.
Last week, the company’s co-founder Carl Pei confirmed the OnePlus 6 will feature a display notch, having attributed the decision to include it to an attempt to provide users with even more screen real estate without delivering a device that’s physically larger than the OnePlus 5T. The presence of the cutout should allow the phone maker to produce a phablet with the biggest screen in its history and have it feature a screen-to-body ratio of around 90-percent, Mr. Pei said. The notch itself remains a controversial topic among tech enthusiasts which account for a significant portion of OnePlus’s target audience, though the OnePlus 6 is still widely predicted to be the company’s most commercially successful product to date, much like all of its previous handsets outsold their direct predecessors.
The OnePlus 6 is expected to be powered by the Qualcomm-made Snapdragon 845 chip and run OxygenOS based on an implementation of Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, according to previous leaks. With the Shenzhen-based firm now officially starting its marketing campaign meant to tease the launch of its next phablet and the OnePlus 5T already being out of stock in most markets, the OnePlus 6 is likely to be announced by early May. The new lineup should entail two models which are likely to be sold worldwide, starting at approximately $500, much like the OnePlus 5T series.
