Samsung Bets Big On VR-Exclusive TV With Six Upcoming Shows

Samsung is betting big on VR-exclusive TV with six upcoming shows as the company has just announced that it plans to release new TV content for its Gear VR headset. All six shows will be available only to those with a VR headset and likely only on the Gear VR, as the TV shows will be viewable through the Samsung VR Video service. The shows will be presented through what Samsung is calling “Pilot Season” in the Samsung VR Video app to begin with, which is a program that Samsung created to help foster new and original content for the VR platform.

As part of the program Samsung worked with six different indie filmmakers to create this content (which Samsung is hoping will be ongoing, so long as it takes off with users) and has given grants to these filmmakers to make it all happen. In addition to the grant the filmmakers were also able to use the Samsung 360 Round to create the TV shows as this was part of the program as well.

While this initiative is in part a way for Samsung to increase the amount of original VR-based TV content available both on Gear VR and in virtual reality in general, since the program included offering the use of the 360 Round camera for the filmmakers that Samsung is working with it sort of acts as a way for the company to bring more awareness to the 360 Round camera itself and perhaps popularize it a little bit more. The six shows that are part of the Pilot Season are called Bro Bots, &Design, Lightcatcher, Sam’s Surreal Gems, The Interpretation of Dreams, and Voyages, all of which are already available to watch in the Samsung VR Video app through the Pilot Season if you have the Gear VR on hand. All of them provide a different experience if you’re looking for something new and fresh to check out.
