More technical details surrounding the recently announced Smartisan Nut 3 were revealed earlier this week by Elliptic Labs whose ultrasound sensing and AI technologies have made the smartphone’s bezel-less design possible. According to the company, the Smartizan Nut 3 employs the same Inner Beauty technology as the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S, which has allowed both OEMs to ditch the standard proximity sensors in favor of a virtual ultrasound sensor, all the while offering additional AI capabilities such as gesture controls.
The large majority of smartphones feature a proximity sensor placed on the top bezel alongside the front-facing camera, and although this has been a standard approach for many years, the emergence of bezel-less designs has pushed various OEMs to come up with new solutions in a quest to minimize screen bezels. Case in point, the Smartisan Nut 3 achieved a narrow top bezel by removing the standard proximity sensor and replacing it with a newer technology from Elliptic Labs, which comes in the form of an AI virtual ultrasound sensor that should offer the same functionality as a standard proximity sensor to the end user, all the while further expanding the smartphone’s capabilities with machine-learning. Aside from a thinner bezel at the top, the Inner Beauty solution also offers new touch-less gesture controls, and through machine-learning, the device can learn new gestures over time. According to Elliptic Labs, this solution requires less energy than other similar technologies and offers sub-millimeter resolution along with a 180-degrees area of interaction.
The Smartisan Nut 3 was officially introduced earlier this week as an upper-mid-range smartphone powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset and 4GB of RAM, along with 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB storage options. The unit has a 5.99-inch display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 resulting in an elongated 18:9 aspect ratio, and is powered by a generous 4,000mAh battery supporting Quick Charge 3. The device is expected to go on sale on Smartisan’s official website on April 22 when prospective buyers will be able to acquire the 32GB variant for the price of 1,299 Yuan ($206). Meanwhile, the 64GB and 128GB models are expected to hit the shelves on the same date for the price of 1,599 Yuan ($254) and 1,999 Yuan ($317) respectively.
