Twitter, among others in the social media space, have been under pressure lately due to fake news and abuse. Twitter has been taking steps to remove accounts that spread fake news, as well as bots. Now Twitter is looking to remove older accounts that are ensuing physical harm towards others. While that hasn’t been as big of a deal for Twitter as fake news, it is still something that the social media company needs to fix and take care of. According to reports, it appears that instances of “kill me” or “kill you” have triggered Twitter to suspend accounts, and the majority of these are on older accounts, or at least on older Tweets.
Many users have reported that Twitter is forcing users to delete tweets that ensue physical harm, while others are also reporting having their Twitter accounts suspended. So it appears that those that likely have mentioned physical harm many times are being suspended while others that mentioned it once or twice, are simply being told to delete those tweets. This is a good thing for Twitter, as it continues to clamp down on rules and regulations of its platform. With Twitter being as large as it is right now, it’s important that it does enforce its rules, and enforce them to the letter. So that the internet remains a great place for everyone.
Twitter has not yet confirmed that it is suspending accounts that are ensuing physical harm, but that will likely be changing in the very near future. It wouldn’t be a surprise to hear something from Twitter in the coming days, on this front. It’s never a good idea to suggest physical harm on social media, especially since you never know who might be watching, or who might report it to the authorities – especially these days with the many mass shootings occurring.
