Xiaomi Mi A2 & Redmi Y2 Headed To India: Report

Xiaomi could be looking to expand its smartphone portfolio in India by introducing two new devices in the entry-level and the mid-range segment. According to recent reports, the Mi A2 and Redmi Y2 names have been discovered in the source code of Xiaomi’s website. The photos provided below mention names of some cases for the two devices without providing any other information on the matter. While Mi A2 is expected to succeed the Mi A1 Android One smartphone launched last year and the Redmi Y2 should be positioned in the budget segment since it is directly succeeding the Redmi Y1 device announced last November. The two devices could be launched in India later this spring, as indicated by the new development.

A number of previous leaks have already provided enough details about the upcoming Mi A2 which is expected to be advertised as the Mi 6X in China. Like its predecessor, Xiaomi might launch the Mi A2 under the Android One program with a stock version of Android 8.1 Oreo for a wider rollout outside China. The new device is expected to feature a 5.99-inch display with an 18:9 aspect ratio offering a resolution of 2,160 x 1,080 pixels. It will come powered by the Snapdragon 626 chipset from Qualcomm paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, as per previous rumors. The dual-camera setup of the handset will likely be retained from its predecessor which boasted a 20-megapixel and 8-megapixel sensor along with f/2.0 and f/1.8 lenses, respectively. While the device will sport a 2,910mAh battery, it will still carry the Mi 6X moniker in China where it will probably be running Xiaomi’s MIUI, recent rumors suggest.

Launched late last year, the Redmi Y1 is an entry-level smartphone from Xiaomi that features an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor and has a 5.5-inch HD display. The phone includes a 3,080mAh battery supporting up to 32 hours of talk time on a single charge and has a fingerprint scanner placed on its back. It is currently available in India at Rs. 8,999 ($139) and its next iteration allegedly called the Redmi Y2 should also be priced around the same point. Along with the Redmi Y1, Xiaomi has also previously announced the Redmi Y1 Lite, an even cheaper variant of the Y1, making the Redmi Y2 Lite another possibility this year.
