Amazon is expanding its Boston Tech Hub center as part of a move that will lead to the creation of 2,000 new jobs in the area, the company said earlier this week, adding that the latest development will build on the existing 3,500 positions it already created in Massachusetts. To date, Amazon invested some $400 million in the New England state and estimates those efforts injected approximately $40 million into its economy. Amazon has yet to clarify how much money it’s committing to the newly announced Boston expansion, though it already revealed other details about the move, including the fact that it’s expanding to WS Development’s Seaport project spanning 7.6 million feet stretching across the city’s waterfront. Some 430,000 square feet will be home to Amazon’s new offices in the area, with all of them being set to open their doors in 2021.
The move will see Amazon almost double its local workforce, in addition to creating a number of temporary jobs related to construction and other aspects of the development itself. The new positions Amazon will be seeking to fill several years from now will span cloud computing, machine learning, robotics, speech science, and similar technology segments, both emerging and established. The Boston project is the second major expansion initiative Amazon announced this week, with the Seattle, Washington-based e-commerce giant recently also confirming it’s seeking to create 3,000 jobs in Vancouver by 2022. As is the case with Boston, the company’s Canadian push will largely be aimed at increasing its headcount of high-tech experts, particularly those in the cloud computing space.
The firm’s Boston arm mostly works on Audible, Alexa, an Amazon Web Services, with the new jobs being primarily aimed at bolstering those operations. Amazon’s aggressive expansion strategy is hence continuing across the continent, with the company still being able to boast about record profits and presently employing some 560,000 people globally, as per its own disclosures.
