Two images depicting what’s said to be Motorola’s Moto Z3 Play mid-ranger and a 5G Moto Mod meant to be launching alongside the smartphone leaked online over the weekend, having been obtained by XDA Developers. The photographs that can be seen below are largely in line with previous sightings of the Android-powered device, including its official press render exclusively shared by AndroidHeadlines last month. The 5G Moto Mod itself has changed since its last known depiction emerged online in January, with the more recent image showing a less symmetrical design with a more homogeneous texture.
The gadget appears to have been updated with an antenna lip mounted on its top left corner (when looked from the back), with the timing of the expected Moto Z3 Play announcement being indicative of this particular product being offered by AT&T, the only mobile service provider in the United States that will have a truly wireless 5G network up and running in select parts of the country later this year. The Moto Z3 Play itself lacks a physical home button and its modular capabilities also eliminate the possibility of a fingerprint reader being included on the back of the device. Instead, the Android handset is expected to have such a scanner embedded into its side-mounted power button, which is a design approach that Sony often employed with its Xperia devices.
The Moto Z3 Play is expected to be announced at a Brazil product launch event scheduled to take place on June 6, with recent rumors pointing to a mobile offering powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636, 4GB of RAM, and a 3,000mAh battery. Motorola is likely to justify the relatively small-capacity battery and the lack of a headphone jack with the fact that the Moto Z3 Play is said to be extremely thin, possibly even more compact than its predecessor which was only 6mm thick. A 6-inch AMOLED panel with an FHD+ resolution and an 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio are also said to be part of the package, together with 32GB or 64GB of storage space, depending on the model. While the new leak shows the user interface sports a pill-shaped icon at the bottom similar to the one from Android P, the handset is believed to be running Android 8.1 Oreo and any navigation gestures it may end up supporting will be developed by Lenovo’s subsidiary itself.
