There’s a new fitness wearable called the AURA Band which measures and tracks both body composition and hydration gearing up for launch after managing to more than double its initial funding goal on Kickstarter. It also tracks the usual fitness metrics such as heart rate, steps, and sleeping patterns, in addition to gamifying activities and even rewarding wearers for hitting goals. However, it is those first two features that really set the AURA Band apart. For body composition and hydration, a double-tap and hold on the main body of the device sends a low-energy electric pulse through the user’s hand. The signal is analyzed via what the device’s makers call bioimpedance analysis once it completes the loop through the body. The analysis provides users with an approximation of their body fat, muscle, and bone data, as well as their estimated level of hydration.
In the meantime, the full list of features for this wearable is not yet finalized. That’s because the campaign is still moving forward toward two additional stretch goals. The first three of those have already been met at $75,000 funding, adding support for Strava, MyFitnessPal, and Runtastic. Apple HealthKit and Google Fit were already supported from the outset. The next two stretch goals at $100,000 and $200,000 will add a vibration motor for notifications and advanced REM sleep monitoring functionality, respective. For now, the wearable supports activity tracking for running, jogging, weight lifting, and cycling and notifications are provided via LED light. Activities are tracked via a 9-axis motion sensor. It also supports competitive gamified sessions with friends, rewards for goal completion, basic sleep tracking, and heart rate monitoring. That’s in addition to the two unique features listed above. In addition to utilizing all of that data to provide feedback about the wearer’s fitness level or workout efficiency, the data can also be sent out via the smartphone app.
Of course, it goes without saying that this is a fitness wearable and probably won’t exactly be the most stylish tech on the market. The AURA Band utilizes a durable stainless steel body covered with a scratch-resistant PVD coating layer. There’s no screen on this device, but all information is viewable via a smartphone companion app available on Android and iOS devices. The band itself comes in either leather or silicone. But at 44mm x 25mm x 5mm and only 22g, and shipping in white, black, green, red, or yellow it certainly won’t be the bulkiest or unsightly fitness band on the market. At an expected retail of only $179, it won’t break the bank either. For the time being, anybody interested can still get an early-bird edition of the AURA Band, engraved with “Kickstarter Edition” on the underside” for just $109.
