Doral, Florida-based consumer electronics manufacturer BLU launched its first wearable in the form of the X Link smartwatch earlier this week, having debuted an affordable offering meant to compete in the low-end segment of the market. The device was built in accordance with the same strategy BLU employs while devising its Android smartphones; it’s a relatively basic gadget designed to punch well above its weight in terms of features-to-money ratio and serve as a suitable entry point in its respective product category.
While listed with a $99.99 price tag, the BLU X Link can presently be ordered for just under $60 and it’s unclear how long will this presumably launch discount last. Available in Black, Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold color options, the wearable offers a 1.1-inch circular IPS LCD panel with an unknown resolution and a zinc alloy body with IP54-certified resistance to foreign elements. That particular Ingress Protection rating means the device prevents solid bodies larger than 1mm in diameter from entering its casing while also being resistant to 60-degree vertical water sprays. A SIM tray is also part of the package, with the BLU X Link being capable of communicating with 2G networks so as to offer basic texting and phone call support even without a connected smartphone. In terms of compatible devices, the wearable should work with every contemporary Android and iOS handset on the market and also provides basic fitness tracking capabilities, being able to offer metrics such as steps taken, sleeping patterns, and heart rate. The gadgets can also relay that data to your mobile device via a dedicated BLU fitness app.
The BLU X Link can show smartphone notifications in real time and ships with a 320mAh cell, though no battery life claims have been made by the manufacturer. The wearable runs an unspecified operating system that isn’t Google’s Wear OS, BLU confirmed. It is presently available for purchase on Amazon and while BLU also has it listed on its website, the “Buy Now” button on that page redirects visitors to the same Amazon listing.
