Google Wifi users will soon be able to benefit from more robust network information and specifically in relation to individual devices. Google made the announcement today confirming the new feature is set to become available to all users “in the coming weeks” at a global level, although the update has already started rolling out.
Currently, Google Wifi users are already able to gain information about their network and in particular when it comes to devices that have the Google Wifi app installed. However, once the new feature is live, through the same app, users will be able to see connection quality results for each individual device connected to Google Wifi. Google specifically draws on connected TVs as a prime example of how users will benefit from this update with those users now able to see the type and quality of the connection the TV currently receives. With the suggestion these results will better inform those users of whether the TV (or one of the Google Wifi points) is positioned in the most optimal location. In other words, making it easier to identify and circumvent ‘dead zones’ in the home.
Although the TV is used as the primary example here, the technology will lend itself to any one of the many devices now connected to a home network, which is something that is only likely to continue to increase going forward. For example, as part of the same announcement Google confirmed that on average in the past month there were eighteen devices connected to each Google Wifi network – further highlighting the increasing need for consumers to be aware of network quality on a per-device basis. For those new to Google Wifi, this is the company’s solution to home network access which is built upon a mesh network approach. As such, and depending on the size of the home, users can opt for a different number of Wifi points which look to ensure all areas of the home are sufficiently covered. Now, with this latest update, the same approach will also be applied at the device level. A visual example of how the new individual interface will look and work is provided below.
