HMD Global had introduced the Nokia 6.1 aka the new Nokia 6 earlier today, and we actually spent some time with the phone in the last couple of days. During that time, we’ve captured quite a few images, that you can check out in the gallery down below, and the full review is on its way as well. Now, as you can see, the device is made mostly out of metal (6000 series aluminum, to be exact), while it sports a single camera on the back, where the phone’s fingerprint scanner is located as well. Nokia’s branding is present on both the phone’s front and back sides.
The device fits well in the hand, it is curved both on front and back sides, and it’s not as slippery as you might think, that matte finish on the back is slightly less slippery than on most other metal unibody smartphones. The phone’s fingerprint scanner seems to be in the right place, it’s easily reachable, and it’s easy to recognize as the phone’s camera module is not flush with the back, so it’s easy to notice when you’re gone too far up. The Nokia 6.1 is a bit wider than you’d think, for a 5.5-inch smartphone, mainly because HMD Global retained the regular 16:9 aspect ratio, instead of opting for an 18:9 or a 19:9 display aspect ratio. The device’s buttons are quite tactile, no issues there, and the device feels to be well-made from the hardware standpoint. Android One branding is also included here, on the back side of the phone, as this device is a part of Google’s Android One project, which means it comes with stock Android, and it basically means it will get updates sooner than most other phones out there.
Now, it is worth noting that the Nokia 6.1 aka the new Nokia 6 is basically a rebranded Nokia 6 (2018) which was introduced back in February during Mobile World Congress (MWC). That phone also ran Android One software, and interestingly enough, it is not the first iteration of this smartphone that was announced, the very first variant was introduced in China back in January, though it did not come with stock Android. All of this probably sounds confusing, but you will find the same hardware used by HMD Global for three Nokia 6 devices this year. In any case, the Nokia 6.1 features a 5.5-inch fullHD display, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of native storage. The phone is fueled by the Snapdragon 630 64-bit octa-core processor, and it comes with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. A 16-megapixel camera is included on the back of the Nokia 6.1, and comes with ZEISS’ optics, while an 8-megapixel camera sits on the phone’s front side. HMD Global has included Bluetooth 5.0 inside of this handset, and the device is 8.2mm thick.
