LG today, announced the new G7 ThinQ. It’s latest smartphone in the G lineup, and the much anticipated follow-up to the G6, that does indeed feature a notch at the top. There is a somewhat decently sized earpiece up at the top of the phone. But that doesn’t mean LG has gone with stereo speakers here on the G7. Instead, it has gone ahead and stuck with just a single-firing speaker at the bottom of the device. When asked why LG decided to stick with just one, the company told AndroidHeadlines that it thinks that a single-firing speaker that is loud – without distorting the sound – is better than going with stereo speakers that would give you the same volume level.
The bottom-firing speaker on the LG G7 ThinQ is actually really good, and does get very loud without dropping the bass or killing the crisp mids and highs. During our short hands on with the LG G7 ThinQ, it did turn out to be pretty good. LG’s Frank Lee, told us in our briefing that the speaker is so loud that you’ll want to ask someone to turn it down. That is definitely the case. While attempting to speak with Lee after the briefing, others were trying out the speaker and we could barely here Lee, who was on the other side of the room from that demo. That’s pretty impressive, and will definitely be an annoyance on the subway. It’s pretty impressive for a single-firing speaker, but even more impressive is the fact that it doesn’t really get muffled when holding the phone in landscape mode. Which is something that normally happens when watching a video or playing games. But that’s not the case with the LG G7 ThinQ, and that is likely solely because of just how loud the speaker is on the device.
If there’s one thing that LG does better than its competitors, it’s definitely sound quality. The LG G7 ThinQ, like previous smartphones from LG, does sport that Quad DAC and a headphone jack. So LG isn’t just giving users a great speaker to make up for a subpar headphone experience or removing the headphone jack, but because it can. The speaker is still important in a smartphone and LG knows it. The company just feels that the tradeoffs for a second speaker at the top of the smartphone isn’t worth the trade-offs, especially when it can achieve the same experience with the bottom-firing speaker on the G7 ThinQ.
