Rugged smartphone case maker LifeProof has now introduced a series of backpacks intended to deliver the same protective benefits to other easily damaged electronics. To that end, the backpacks all share numerous features in common. For starters, each is built from a CORDURA fabric that’s water-repellent. LifeProof also went a bit further to include a sealed “tech pocket” that is weather-resistant and fleece-lined to prevent scratches and other damage to a device up to the size of an iPhone 8 Plus – that’s 138.4mm x 67.3mm x 7.3mm, or not quite big enough for Samsung’s Galaxy S9 series. That pocket features a pass-through for cords and cables as well, so users can still charge their device or listen to music while it’s secured.
Meanwhile, on every pack, there’s a detachable chest strap for more support, tie-downs for expanding storage, and a three-liter hydration reservoir pocket to make life just a bit easier. Each also features organization pockets on the inside. Where the packs differ is mostly in price, size, and style. The LifeProof Quito is a $100 barrel-style pack which holds up to 18-liters of stuff and has a cinch-style top covered by a hood-flap. On the other hand, the remaining three offer even more protection for laptops with a separate sealed and reinforced laptop pocket and a similarly-featured side pocket for more tech. They also come with hidden stash pockets for storing more valuable items. The two more expensive models, the Squamish XL and Goa hold 15-inch laptops, while the smaller and less expensive Squamish can hold a 13-inch notebook. Those are priced at $180, $160, and $140, respectively. They’ve each got their own additional pockets for storing tech items and other minor differentiating features to set them apart, too. For example, the Squamish-branded models come with two extra water-bottle pockets, while Goa only comes with one.
These are, of course, not the most affordable bags on the market. However, there’s a lot to be had here for the money and the savings from protecting the technology these are meant to carry may very well make the price worth it. That’s without consideration for the included hydration packs or convenience of modern organization features. Moreover, they’re available in three color schemes to suit the wearer’s personality including Stealth black, Urban Coast grey, and Rush red.
