Robert Downey Jr. has teamed up with YouTube Red, Network Entertainment, and Sonar Entertainment to bring a new documentary series to the streaming service which focuses on artificial intelligence (AI). The confirmation on this comes from a press release by Sonar Entertainment which confirms the order from YouTube, as well as those involved behind the scenes.
According to the press release, the new series will be comprised of eight episodes which shine a spotlight on the world of AI. While set for a release through YouTube Red, the docuseries will be executive produced by ‘Team Downey,’ the entertainment company started by Robert Downey Jr. and producer, Susan Downey. In addition to being one of the show’s executive producers, Robert Downey Jr. is also expected to host and narrate the series. According to comments attributed to Susan Downey, this has come about in part to a shared “curiosity for A.I” with those involved hoping to bring to fruition an ‘exploration of AI’ in a “bold, splashy, and entertaining way.” While YouTube’s Global Head of Original Content, Susanne Daniels, was quoted saying the new series will “explore the exciting developments in the world of A.I” while also providing a “glimpse into the future.” Each of the eight episodes will be one hour in duration and will draw on experts within various scientific and philosophical fields for background on AI, what it means, and where it is going in the future.
While the docuseries is still an unnamed project, Network Entertainment is showcasing the image above on its website which at the very least suggests “A.I.” is likely to be the working title, if not the actual title the series will arrive with when it lands. Speaking of which, while no firm date has been set for the eight-part AI series, Sonar Entertainment has confirmed the new show will debut at some point in 2019 and “exclusively on YouTube Red.” For those new to YouTube Red, this is the company’s paid option which offers ad-free music and videos, as well as exclusive original content — such as this latest project — at a cost of $9.99 per month in the US.
