Sprint today announced the launch of a new plan aimed at those aged 55 and older. In short, eligible customers will be able to sign up for this plan with rates from as low as $35 per month, per line. The main caveat is the lowest price option is based on having two lines associated with the account. In other words, what Sprint is actually offering is two 55+ lines for $70 per month, which breaks down to only $35 per month, per line. The new Unlimited 55+ plan is due to go live in the US tomorrow, May 18, and according to Sprint is a limited-time offer although no specifics were provided on when the introductory offer will expire.
For those looking for a single line option the same plan costs $50 per month. Technically speaking, it is the same price for the two-line option although the second line is added at a heavily discounted rate of $20. Another caveat that should be noted is the quoted prices are based on Autopay being in effect. Sprint does not state what the cost would be without Autopay, or even if the plan is available without Autopay.
What is of benefit, however, is this is an ‘unlimited’ plan and so those who do sign up will be able to benefit from unlimited data, talk and text at the reduced rate. Some of the caveats on this point is the capping of video streaming quality at 480p resolution, music at 500kbps, and game streaming at 2Mbps. Though for those who need higher and greater caps Sprint does offer video streaming at 1080p resolution, music streaming at 1.5Mbps, and game streaming at 8Mbps, for an additional $10 per month. Additional benefits listed with the new plan include Sprint Global Roaming and mobile hotspot – though the latter is based on 3G speeds. Generally speaking, this seems to be an almost identical plan to the one currently on offer from T-Mobile. As while T-Mobile’s plan did originally start out by offering two 55+ lines for $60 per month, it has since seen its price raised to $70 per month for the two lines, with largely the same benefits and restrictions in place.
