HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas, has strongly hinted a new and updated Nokia 5 might be coming soon. The information on this is anything but firm, considering the comment came by way of a Twitter reply responding to a question relating to the possibility of a Nokia 5 (2018), and simply stated “stay tuned.” Although, that in itself does suggest the phone is at the very least, planned for release – if not soon.
Due to the general lack of details provided in the message, what a 2018 version of the Nokia 5 will offer remains unknown. However, this is not the first Android-powered Nokia 5 to come to market considering one was launched last year and with this expected to be a new and updated model some assumptions can be made on the new phone. For example, when the original Nokia 5 was unveiled, it was so along with a Nokia 3 and a Nokia 6 (as well as the revamped Nokia 3310). In this case, the numerical naming was somewhat purposeful as the higher the number, the more higher-end the product. So while the Nokia 3 was aimed more at the affordable sector and the Nokia 6 as a slightly more premium option, the Nokia 5 sat firmly between the two in terms of price and specs. Which is likely where a new 2018 version would also reside by looking to accommodate those in the market for a lower mid-range smartphone.
At the spec level, the Nokia 5 boasted a 5.2-inch (1280 x 720 resolution) display, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 octa-core SoC. As well as a single 13-megapixel rear camera, 8-megapixel front-facing camera, a 3,000 mAh battery, and Android 7.1.1 (Nougat) – although it has since received an update to Android 8.0 (Oreo). While some of these specs are likely to see an upgrade in the newer version (as well as the design in general), the overall positioning of the device is likely to remain unchanged. Those in the US who are in the market for a new phone now, and especially those interested in giving Nokia’s recent Android approach a try, the company did announce the Nokia 6.1 only last week. This is essentially an updated version of the already-mentioned Nokia 6, runs on Android One, and is now available to buy priced at $269.
stay tuned 🙂
