The Nokia 6.1 is now official, being the latest mid-range smartphone from HMD Global and yet another one of the company’s offerings launching as part of Google’s Android One program, meaning its future buyers can expect a stock version of Android 8.1 Oreo, timely software updates, and free unlimited Google Photos storage for both images and videos with minimal compression. The name of the handset is meant to be indicative of the fact that this is a rebranded version of the Nokia 6 (2018) which HMD launched at Mobile World Congress in late February, though this particular model ships with some incremental upgrades and has been specifically designed for the United States.
As far as mid-rangers go, the Nokia 6.1 can go head-to-head with the vast majority of options that are currently available on the market in the same category, which is impressive considering its $269 price tag. For that modest sum, you’re getting Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 630, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of flash memory expandable by up to 256GB via a microSD card. A 16-megapixel (f/2.0) camera is also part of the package, having been designed and implemented in collaboration with famous German optics company Carl Zeiss, as is an 8-megapixel (f/2.0) front-facing sensor. HMD opted to stick with the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio for the 5.5-inch FHD screen of the Nokia 6.1, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack. The Nokia 6.1 boasts dual-SIM capabilities, NFC support, 3,000mAh battery, and Bluetooth 5.0 as well.
The aluminum unibody design has also been retained since the original Nokia 6 debuted last year, with the newly announced mid-ranger still looking and feeling more premium than its price tag would imply.
