A new YouTube Red Original is being promoted via Google Assistant’s streaming capability. The series is called ‘Impulse’ and focuses on a 16 year-old girl who happens to be the new girl in town, but also ends up with newly discovered powers. The show is due to start on June 6, but YouTube is letting people have access to the pilot episode early and for free if they happen to have a phone with Google Assistant or a smart speaker like Google Home.
While the series will be a YouTube Red Original and require a subscription going forward to access the remainder of the series’ first season, people can ask Google Assistant to “talk to Impulse” then give the required password, which is Henry, and the user will be sent a link to the video through their connected Google account. It’s an interesting way to not only promote the upcoming show, but also a way to promote Google Assistant and its feature that lets you talk to it to stream content just by speaking to it.
While the feature itself is not new, this serves as a good way to remind people of all that their Google Assistant devices can do, and even if people don’t end up choosing to subscribe to YouTube Red after watching the first episode of this new show, it at least gets them access to the first episode which could be considered a cool little freebie. Worth noting is that this only seems to be supported in certain countries like the U.S., with multiple reports from users stating that it’s not available in parts of Europe like the Netherlands and Italy, the UK, and India. It’s also possible that this may be a U.S.-only availability at the moment though the tweet from YouTube Red promoting this feature doesn’t say as much. If you’ve got the necessary equipment and you feel like giving it a try, you can check it out using the phrase and password mentioned above.
