HTC announced the mid-range Desire 12 and Desire 12 Plus for the Indian market last week along with pricing and availability details, and the duo can now be purchased in the country. Starting today, prospective buyers can acquire the HTC Desire 12 and/or Desire 12 Plus from the OEM’s online and offline retail channels in India, with pricing starting at Rs. 15,800 ($234) for the smaller model. Meanwhile, the HTC Desire 12 Plus is available for Rs. 19,790 ($293).
HTC’s latest two entries in the Desire lineup share a few design similarities across the board, but as expected the HTC Desire 12 Plus benefits from a few extra features as well as a higher screen-to-body ratio, even though both models boast an 18:9 image format and relatively thin bezels all around. They also share the same display resolution of 1440 x 720, however, while the HTC Desire 12 has a 5.5-inch diagonal, the Desire 12 Plus uses a larger 6-inch panel. Likewise, although both smartphone models feature a similar glossy back panel available in the same two color options, i.e. Cool Black and Warm Silver, only the HTC Desire 12 Plus uses a dual camera setup comprising a 13-megapixel main sensor coupled with a 2-megapixel shooter. In contrast, the HTC Desire 12 packs a single 13-megapixel unit, although both devices take advantage of phase detection autofocus technology. Furthermore, while the smaller model has a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with 720p video recording capabilities, the HTC Desire 12 Plus offers an 8-megapixel sensor with 1080p recording.
Things are also quite different under the hood, where the HTC Desire 12 relies on a MediaTek MT6739 chipset featuring four ARM Cortex-53 CPU cores clocked at 1.3 GHz, a PowerVR GE8100 graphics processor, and 2GB or 3GB of RAM. In contrast, the HTC Desire 12 Plus features a Snapdragon 450 chipset from Qualcomm, housing eight Cortex-A53 CPU cores clocked at 1.8GHz, an Adreno 506 GPU and 3GB of RAM. Finally, the Plus model takes advantage of additional security features such as a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and runs a newer version of Android OS, namely Oreo, whereas the HTC Desire 12 comes with Android Nougat, signaling perhaps that the Plus model could enjoy better software support throughout its lifetime.
