Huawei is currently testing an update for the P20 and P20 Pro which will brings ‘GPU Turbo’ to the two devices. The company has announced that it’s looking for beta testers for a closed beta test in China which will help them test GPU Turbo, and some other features, before they reach the market. As it’s usually the case, this update will first reach Chinese consumers, after which it will roll out to global P20 and P20 Pro units as well.
The Huawei P20 and P20 Pro had been released with Android 8.1 Oreo and Emotion UI (EMUI) 8.1 on top of them, so this upcoming update will not change that, but it will bring some changes, most notable of which is GPU Turbo which the company announced recently. GPU Turbo was announced along with the Honor Play handset, and the company said that it will be reaching a number of Huawei and Honor devices in the coming months. GPU Turbo basically stands for graphics processing acceleration technology which increases graphics processing efficiency, and as a result, your smartphone is expected to offer faster performance, especially when it comes to games. GPU Turbo is expected to provide 60-percent better graphics performance, and 30-percent better power consumption of P20 and P20 Pro’s Kirin 970 SoC. Huawei actually made a big deal about GPU Turbo when it announced it, so it will be interesting to see if there will be any performance changes on the P20 and P20 Pro, as both of those phones are extremely fast as it is.
Huawei notes that the device which beta testers will use should not be rooted, and the company is actually planning to take 2,000 beta testers. We’re not sure when will this update reach global consumers, but it seems like GPU Turbo has been in testing for quite some time, and Huawei is only looking to iron out some issues with the update, so it could reach both Chinese and global users in a month or two, but we’re only guessing. It is worth noting, though, that the P20 Pro is expected to get 960fps slow-mo recording in the near future.
