Marvel Entertainment Has A New Card Battle Game On The Way

Marvel Entertainment has a brand new Android game called MARVEL Battle Lines in the works, in collaboration with Nexon, in the strategic card battle category. The title was announced on May 31 via the official MARVEL news blog and will feature hundreds of characters, covering both Super Heroes and Super Villains. Aside from a few art renders for some of the characters, there haven’t been a lot of details provided as to who those characters will be. However, the title will feature a completely original single-player story, penned by long-time MARVEL writer Alex Irvine. A real-time turn-based competitive player vs. player (PvP) mode will also be present and MARVEL says that the gameplay will be designed to allow first-time players to be competitive in that right out of the gate. That accessibility will be tuned to allow players to advance in either mode, collecting new cards and working out the best strategy for their own unique play style.

Each card will also feature an extensive backstory on the character it represents, which players will be able to access by virtually “flipping” the card over. The collected cards will be used to create a deck, which players can customize and tweak as they gain more characters. Gameplay, as mentioned above, centers around turn-based battles but MARVEL has been tight-lipped about exactly how that will play out. However, the company has indicated that each player will be able to build multiple decks. Card art, meanwhile, appears to be drawn up by MARVEL’s own artists, which should give the latest in the wave of MARVEL games an authentic comic book feel.

The only other details provided, as of this writing, is that the game will be “free-to-download.” MARVEL hasn’t filled that out with any information about whether or not players will need to pay for in-app purchases, so it may be best not to get too excited about that just yet. Players might have to play for in-game currency, access to select cards, for extra “energy” or “plays,” or any number of other in-game items. That’s not unusual for these types of games and is entirely possible, at this point. In any case, the game is slated to be released at some point during 2018. Given that the year is nearly half over, that means nobody is likely to have to wait too long to find out more.
