Project Fi is getting Family Link compatibility today. This is big news for parents, especially those who are already using Family Link tools and may have been considering a switch to Project Fi services, or those who are already using Project Fi and may have been giving some thought to setting up the Family Link controls to help better manage the device use for their kids. While Project Fi’s group plans have been available since late 2016, the inclusion of the Family Link compatibility lets parents add kids under the age of 13 to the plan so if you have kids that are younger than 13 they can finally be a part of your service.
For this to work parents will need to have the Google account that’s tied to Family Link be the same Google account used for Project Fi. Between the tools used for Fi to see how much data you’re using each month and what’s using that data, and the Family Link app that gives parents the control to remotely manage the device use of their children, there’s plenty of control over how and when kids under the age of 13 are using their device, right down to how much screen time kids have thanks to the ability to remotely lock up a device if parents feel their child has had enough device time for the day.
As a recap, Family Link lets parents set daily limits for their kids in terms of device use time, and it can be as little as 30 minutes or a few hours throughout the day. With limits set parents are able to open up the Family Link application and view how much of that limit has already been used up. Additionally, if you want your kids to stop using the device around 8:30 at night, you can set the bedtime for the device to be locked from use to 8:30, and then use wouldn’t be unlocked until wake time that you have set.
