Verizon has launched a new limited-time offer in a bid to get more mobile users to switch over to its prepaid service which will allow new customers or lines to access double the usual data. While possibly not quite as appealing as Sprint’s recent short-lived $15 unlimited offer, the deal doesn’t seem to be one that will expire for those who sign up either. Instead, as long as a prepaid line stays active following sign-up, the double data rate will stay in place. In effect, that means that as long as the given line remains paid up, new customers or those added on new lines can get 20GB for $60 instead of 10GB. Standard data carry-over and included hotspot provisions appear to remain intact, as does the plan’s unlimited calling and texting nationwide. The promotion covers each of the carrier’s prepaid plans, with each data amount on offer doubling upon completion of sign-up.
There’s no timeframe set for the duration of the offer itself but it won’t necessarily be available for long. However, as mentioned above, Verizon says it will remain in place as long as the line remains active on “an eligible prepaid plan.” Presumably, that means signing up to have the bill auto-paid will keep the double data in place indefinitely. Moreover, that could mean that users who discover they need more data after signing up for a more affordable plan will be able to adjust which plan their line is active on without losing the doubling bonus. The change also reportedly doesn’t appear in the store itself during the purchase process. Instead, it appears only in the company’s account management tool, My Verizon, after activation has been completed.
In addition to unlimited calling and texting in the U.S., the Verizon Prepaid plans also offer unlimited texting to a list of over 200 extra locales and unlimited calls to Mexico or Canada. The latter of those perks only applies to the 10GB plans – the promotional 20GB-equivalent plans. Obviously, those signing up for unlimited plans won’t gain any benefit from the promotion at all. The deal does apply to family plans as well as individual lines, however.
