The Unihertz Atom is the latest Kickstarter success story, with the world’s smallest rugged Android smartphone just surpassing $900,000 in funding less than ten days since its campaign started. The handset was funded last week in a matter of minutes as hundreds of backers jumped on the chance to support the project whose initial goal was sitting at only $50,000. Unihertz’s latest success is widely interpreted as a combination of the fact that its new product targets a relatively popular niche and its established track record which includes the release of the world’s smallest 4G handset – the Jelly Phone.
While the Atom Kickstarter campaign lost some momentum following its strong start, it’s still expected to surpass $1 million in funding by July as Unihertz is raising funds for 26 more days. Its early June debut saw the phone surpass its goal over eleven times in less than a day, having hit $560,000 in funding after only sixteen hours, a company spokesperson said in a statement to AndroidHeadlines. Powered by Android 8.1 Oreo, the Unihertz Atom features a 2.45-inch TFT LCD panel and comes with an octa-core processor clocked at a maximum operating frequency of 2.0GHz, as well as 4GB of RAM. 64GB of flash memory is part of the package as well, together with 4G, Dual-SIM, and NFC capabilities. The Unihertz Atom is an IP68-certified device resistant to both dust particles and water submersion, features a front-mounted fingerprint reader, FM radio, and a 2,000mAh battery.
The front camera of the compact Android handset is an 8-megapixel affair, whereas its rear system utilizes a 16-megapixel sensor supported by an LED flash. The device is only 96 x 45 x 18mm in size and weighs just 108g with its battery included, being by far the most portable product of its kind in the mobile industry’s history. Unihertz will start shipping first Atom units in October, with Kickstarter backers being able to order the Android handset for as little as $219.
