The BoxLock Home, a smart padlock that aims to protect the packages of homeowners from thieves, is now available for purchase to Amazon Prime members. BoxLock, the manufacturer of the smart device, partnered with Amazon to exclusively launch the product on the retail giant’s website. The tech firm noted that there is a growing need to secure packages after being delivered, especially since the number of items that are stolen by thieves is expected to rise within the next few years, and this product ensures that the packages are protected until the homeowner retrieves them.
The BoxLock Home is built from hardened steel and tamper-resistant zinc, and it contains a lithium-ion battery that offers up to 30 days of battery life on a single charge. The smart lock connects to the internet using Wi-Fi networks that run on the 2.4GHz frequency, and it utilizes a variety of encryption technologies to safeguard user’s data. Aside from Amazon, the device works with all major carriers in the United States, including USPS, UPS, and FedEx. The BoxLock Home also includes a barcode scanner, which allows the smart lock to identify packages with their labels. The lock will only open once it determines that the package is already out for delivery and it is addressed to the homeowner. These criteria prevent thieves from retrieving the packages using fake package labels or even the old labels addressed to the homeowner. Meanwhile, the BoxLock Home app pushes a notification once the package has been delivered and deposited inside the container. Homeowners can also use the app to track the items that are currently in transit and to retrieve the packages locked inside the container. Aside from protecting the items of the homeowner, the tech firm stated that the smart lock significantly reduces the incidences of redeliveries as well as the total time spent by the delivery personnel in transporting the packages.
At this point, only Amazon Prime members can purchase the BoxLock Home from the website of the online retail giant, and the device ships with a price tag of $129. The device manufacturer also stated on the product’s Amazon page that it is currently working with other companies to develop and certify containers that are compatible with the smart lock.
