OnePlus announced today on its forums that the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T will both be getting Android P. Both devices were announced in 2016, so it’s actually a bit surprising to see them getting updated to Android P, but definitely a good surprise. OnePlus reiterated that the OnePlus 6 will get updated first, followed by the OnePlus 5 and 5T and then the OnePlus 3 and 3T smartphones. So while the OnePlus 3 and 3T smartphones are going to be last to get the update, they are going to get it.
Over the last few months, OnePlus has been working with Google, and have had the Android P developer preview on its OnePlus 5 and 6 devices, so updates should come a bit quicker than in recent years. Seeing as OnePlus has had access to the code – albeit early code – for a few months now. With the Android P developer previews on its smartphones, OnePlus has also been getting valuable feedback from its community of users, which is also going to help move along the process of updating all five of its smartphones that are destined to get Android P. Now while Google has not even named Android P officially yet, nor has the stable build been released, it’s good to see manufacturers announcing which devices will get updated to Android P.
OnePlus runs a slightly overhauled version of Android in OxygenOS. It features a good number of the features that are found in stock Android, but there are still some changes here. And since OnePlus is only using the most popular chipsets – Snapdragon 820, 835 and 845 respectively – it should also make it easier to update its smartphones. OnePlus, like most manufacturers, have not released a time frame for when these updates will roll out. And that’s because, firstly Google hasn’t released the final version of Android P, secondly things change, bugs pop up and things get delayed. So it’ll arrive when it’s ready.
