Galaxy Grand Prime Plus (2018) May Sport An Iris Scanner

A few details regarding the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime Plus (2018) have been revealed after the firmware files of the upcoming budget smartphone became available. The firmware shows that the budget handset will likely sport an iris scanner for biometric authentication of the user. However, in a likely effort to reduce manufacturing costs, the handset will not include an infrared (IR) LED driver but it will instead use a standard flash LED. Samsung has been working to develop budget smartphones with integrated iris scanners as part of its efforts to eventually replace physical banks with mobile banking, and these devices will likely be launched as early as the latter part of 2018. However, it is interesting to note that another technology that incorporates IR filters into the front-facing camera of the handset is already available since 2016, and it could also be used by Samsung to integrate iris recognition in lower-end devices.

The firmware of the Galaxy Grand Prime Plus (2018) also shows that the device will be powered by the Exynos 7870 chipset, which is comprised of an octa-core ARM Cortex A53 64-bit CPU and the Mali-T830 GPU. This chipset powers some of Samsung’s recent mid-range smartphone offerings, including the Galaxy J6 and the Galaxy A6. The firmware shows that the device will sport a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 960 by 540 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9. The handset is expected to sport capacitive buttons for navigating through the device’s user interface, while the smartphone will reportedly include a USB Type-C port with OTG support. The latter feature allows the handset to directly read data from flash drives and other USB devices.

Moreover, the Galaxy Grand Prime Plus (2018) will reportedly ship with a 16-megapixel sensor at the back, and this shooter is capable of recording 4K video clips and slow-motion video with frame rates of up to 240fps. Meanwhile, the front-facing camera of the smartphone will likely sport a 5-megapixel snapper. To keep its lights on, the handset will likely sport a 3,630mAh battery. More details about the Galaxy Grand Prime Plus (2018) will likely become available once the complete version of the firmware is released.
