Netflix has now provided details regarding some of its upcoming original content by confirming it plans to release a number of TV shows and movies based on the work of Mark Millar. In total, five new projects have now been confirmed consisting of two new original series, and three new movies.
Mark Millar is a comic book writer who has already received acclaim in the movie world thanks to a number of Millar’s creations having successfully been adapted to high-profile movies. For example, Kick-Ass and Kingsman. As was the case with those two movie examples, the new Netflix titles also draw on a superhero theme although not in the traditional superhero sense. In terms of the shows, Jupiter’s Legacy and American Jesus are the two that have now been confirmed. While the new movies en route are Empress, Huck, and Sharkey The Bounty Hunter. The latter one is actually a new creation altogether with a comic book expected to be released next year prior to the release of the movie. For background, the Millar-based projects in the pipeline are owned by the Millarworld company, and while Millarworld was initially set up by Mark and Lucy Miller, the company was acquired last year by Netflix. Therefore, this announcement on these new Millar-based titles is understood to be an extension of that acquisition. In spite of this, Mark and Lucy Millar are understood to be still working with Netflix to bring the content to market.
Netflix has had a fairly contrasting couple of weeks recently as earlier this week the streaming service announced Q3, 2018 revenue of $3.91 billion which was lower than expectations, as was the number of new subscribers for the quarter. Two aspects that are unlikely to be favorably looked on by the market. However, this also came just a few days after the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced which saw Netflix end HBO’s long-term run as the most-nominated Network. Largely in part due to the success of its own original programs and content. Something which this Millar-related announcement will now look to build on going forward.
