Google Duo has just received a much-requested feature, it now supports video calls on Android tablets and iPads. This feature has been in the works for quite some time now, and Google has made things official by announcing this change via Twitter. The company released an official GIF image showing the functionality, along with a caption to go along with it, and we’ve already received the update, you will notice it in Google Duo’s changelog in the Play Store.
Google did not add any new features aside from this tablet functionality, but it seems some fixes are included in the update as well, as the company also listed “Bug fixes and product improvements” in the changelog. Google Duo has been around since August 2016, and it took Google quite a bit of time to make video calling available for tablets in Google Duo. This app should now work for basically any Android tablet, as long as it runs Android 4.1 or later. Google Duo, as some of you probably remember, was announced alongside Google Allo during Google I/O 2016, though it took Google a bit of time to make both apps available to consumers. Speaking of Google Allo, the company has announced that it’s putting the development of that app on hold, as Google seems to be switching its focus over to Android Messages, as part of a plan to make it Android’s iMessage, basically. Some of Google Allo’s features are already making their way to other Google-made apps, but it seems like Google Duo will not suffer the same fate, at least not anytime soon.
Google Duo is currently holding a 4.6-star rating in the Play Store, and it has been installed to over 500 million devices thus far, including devices that come with Google Duo pre-installed, of course. Google Duo is basically a video calling app only, and it was supposed to replace Hangouts in that regard, as Google wanted to push Hangouts towards business interactions. If you’d like to use Google Duo’s new tablet functionality, do update your Google Duo app if an update is available, if not, it will be soon.
