Google is introducing a new way of showing information on Google Search that will make it easier for users to see multiple aspects of a certain topic. Even though Google Search has been showing snippets of information relevant to the keyword entered by the user, the search giant remarked that it may not provide the details needed by the user. To solve this concern, Google will show panels that contain subtopics related to the search keyword. The subtopics displayed in the panels are automatically chosen based on what Google understands as the most relevant results for the user’s search topic. In addition, these panels may also include links to relevant sources of information.
Google provided two examples of how this new format will work. For example, if the person enters the keywords “quartz vs granite”, the search page will not only show the differences between the physical features of the two countertop materials, but it will also display subtopics that contrasts the costs, durability, and weight of the two items as well as the benefits of using either one of the two materials. On the other hand, users who will search for more information regarding an emergency fund will also get details about the size, purpose, and importance of the fund. Google mentioned in its blog post that the new panels will be deployed over the next few days.
This new feature is just one of the recent improvements introduced by Google, which should make it easier for users to get more information from a single search. For example, Featured Snippets, a feature that contextualizes a search topic by providing relevant information, has seen a number of improvements over the last few months. Last December, Google enhanced this functionality by adding more information and images to the snippets, while another update rolled out last February enables Google Search to show multiple featured snippets that answer different variations of a question entered by the user. Furthermore, the Knowledge Panel now shows related search topics directly inside the search result, and Google has also streamlined the stock card that shows up in Google Search by placing different types of information about a company into separate sections.
