Motorola had promised three years of Moto Mods support when it debuted the Moto Z back in 2016. That meant the Moto Z, Moto Z2 and Moto Z3 lines would get Moto Mod support. Many had believed that Motorola might ditch the Moto Mods after it met its promise, but that is apparently not the case, at least according to Engadget. Motorola told the publication that Moto Mods will continue to be part of its mobile strategy for the foreseeable future. Motorola would not mention how often they plan to release new Moto Mods, or what Moto Mods might be coming up next. Just that these will continue to be part of its strategy moving forward – meaning the 5G Moto Mod is not going to be the last Moto Mod.
Moto Mods are an interesting concept, and one might argue that it is the only modular smartphone concept that has actually paid off. With Moto Mods, Motorola is able to extend the capabilities of smartphones. Whether that is by giving it more juice to keep it running all day, a bigger and better speaker, a better camera, or even 5G support. And it’s pretty easy to use them, just snap them onto the back of your Moto Z smartphone and you’re good to go. It’s just that simple. And Motorola has put out some rather interesting Moto Mods over the past few years, including a photo printer from Polaroid. However, the downside to Moto Mods is that the size and design of the Moto Z lineup remained mostly unchanged for three years, so that older Moto Mods would still be compatible. Which is why many believed that Motorola might ditch Moto Mods, but that’s not the case.
The Moto Z3 goes on sale August 16, and it’s the company’s third-generation Moto Z smartphone, and all of the existing Moto Mods do work with it. However many are pretty disappointed with the device, considering it is sporting 2017 specs, as well as a full HD+ display instead of Quad HD+. So it could be time for Motorola to move the Moto Z lineup into its own area and have something else act as its flagship, high-end smartphone.
