Samsung 8K QLED TVs Coming To IFA Berlin 2018

IFA Berlin 2018 is just around the corner and Samsung appears to be gearing up for the official launch of its 8K QLED line of televisions at the event. In fact, the company already has a billboard up in Berlin relaying that fact, based on a photo posted to Twitter by user Leo D. The image seen below clearly shows a partially covered television being unveiled, along with the words “QLED 8K” and “Prepare to be amazed at IFA.” There’s not a lot of ambiguity to that statement or the imagery and Samsung has already launched its latest run of mobile devices, tablets, and wearables this year. So it’s safe to say that the Korean tech giant will be presenting more of its home technology at IFA and that at least one new 8K television or an associated official launch will be part of that endeavor.

The image does appear to bear some resemblance to an 8K TV shown off at CES 2018 earlier this year that the company has dubbed “The Wall.” Its nearly bezel-free flat design stands out for example but one of the biggest indicators is that the company has filed several trademarks bearing that designation since the CES reveal. Additionally, The Wall currently seems to be the only 8K television the company is working on and more information or a possible launch were expected to occur at some point later in the year. Europe’s largest annual consumer tech gathering, which runs from August 31 through September 5, makes logical sense as either a launch vehicle or a platform to detail the technology further.

Setting that aside, the largest known version of The Wall was already shown at Las Vegas-based CES and featured a 146-inch panel, A.I.-driven content upscaling, and microLED technology. No pricing was offered at the time, although it is expected to be near the top of the scale for televisions because of its use of microLED technology. The latter of those is very expensive to manufacturer due to the much smaller size of the LEDs involved but it also offers greater resolutions and more accurate colors. No backlighting is required either, meaning that TVs can be thinner. At the time it was unveiled, Samsung suggested that its 8K QLED panes would be ‘modular,’ allowing buyers to ‘create’ a screen size to suit their individual needs.
