Samsung Promises Smarter Wi-Fi With New SmartThings Mesh Router

Samsung Electronics announced the latest addition to its SmartThings product family, debuting it in the form of the new SmartThings Wifi mesh network system. Much like its name suggests, the release in question is a router setup designed for mesh networking that promises to improve the data transfer rate and capacity of your home broadband solution while also delivering a more intuitive user experience through the power of automation. The SmartThings Wifi mesh system relies on artificial intelligence algorithms from San Francisco-based startup Plume which devised a platform for automated network optimization that will manage your wireless setup with the goal of maximizing its performance in a dynamic manner, without requiring you to do anything.

Guest access and parental control support are also part of the package, together with SmartThings integration that can serve as a basis for a smart home setup without the need for additional networking hardware. A single SmartThings Wifi router has an effective range of 1,500 square feet, thus being one of the most efficient solutions in the industry by that metric. As was the case with Samsung’s previous mesh networking gadgets, the newly announced routers can be managed through the company’s SmartThings mobile app for Android and iOS devices.

Simultaneously with the release of the new router, Samsung also launched new iterations of the SmartThings Hub, Motion Sensor, Water Leak Sensor, Smart Outlet, and Multipurpose Sensor, all of which now feature improved connectivity (Bluetooth 4.1) and can communicate with broadband networks over the air, being the first generation of the company’s IoT products that don’t require an ethernet connection. The price tags attached to the solutions range from $14.99 to $69.99, with the gadgets already being available for purchase to American consumers and businesses.

Samsung’s newest mesh wi-fi solution can be purchased globally as of today and is priced at $119.99 in the United States. The South Korean company is also offering a three-pack that will set you back $279.99, allowing you to save nearly $80. The tech giant only announced a white variant of the router and it’s presently unclear whether more models are planned to be released in the future.
