T-Mobile’s CEO, John Legere, posted a new video on his social media platforms today, teasing what the company may have in store for the next Un-Carrier announcement. Un-Carrier 15 is slated for next Wednesday, August 15. The short video showcases John Legere retiring another relic of the wireless industry. In the video, you see things like “taxes and fees”, “contracts”, “data limits” and other things. All things that were killed off in various Un-Carrier announcements. Which leads many people to wonder what could T-Mobile be getting rid of this time around?
Many are believing that this could be its streaming TV announcement. T-Mobile completed its acquisition of Layer3 earlier this year, and announced that it would be launching its own streaming TV service at some point. Though, T-Mobile hasn’t talked much about this service yet, but it could be a perfect time to do so at Un-Carrier 15. T-Mobile announced with its Layer3 acquisition that it was looking to change the cable and satellite industry for good. It’s an industry that desperately needs change. In fact, some of the most hated companies are in that industry, and it’s no wonder why. But the relic that T-Mobile might be retiring, could be your TV, or at least your cable box/satellite dish.
Layer3 was a streaming TV service that many people likely didn’t know too much about. That’s because it wasn’t backed by a big company like PlayStation VUE, DIRECTV NOW, YouTube TV or Sling TV are. But it does have a ton of great talent and programming already. Layer3 was also a pioneer at streaming TV service while using less data. It has been able to engineer its streams to be more efficient on slower networks. Which means that T-Mobile customers can all watch TV using Layer3 without slowing down the network. Which makes perfect sense for T-Mobile, especially after it’s Music Freedom and BingeOn announcements in previous years. We shall know what T-Mobile has up its sleeves in about a week’s time.
