T-Mobile has now confirmed its next “Un-carrier” move will take place on August 15, 2018. Although that was largely the extent to the information provided due to T-Mobile not offering any indication as to what will be on offer with this latest industry announcement. In fact, T-Mobile’s CEO, John Legere, specifically remaining coy when making the original announcement, stating that it’s time to let the speculation begin.
Generally speaking, T-Mobile’s Un-carrier initiative is all about disrupting the carrier industry and so it would be expected the next one will largely follow in the same footsteps with Legere also referencing the August 15 date as when its “next industry-shaking Un-carrier move” will happen. Of course, there is the question of how many more disruption-based changes can the carrier make that will have the impact expected, considering that over the last few years it has introduced multiple new features and changes. For reference, some of the biggest and most noteworthy Un-carrier announcements so far from T-Mobile have included all-in plans where taxes and fees are part of the one advertised price, free Netflix for accounts with two or more lines on a T-Mobile ONE plan, T-Mobile Tuesdays which offers T-Mobile customers free or discounted promotions each week, Binge On and Music Freedom which removes caps from select video and music streaming services, the ability to rollover unused 4G LTE data with Data Stash, and more.
On a more general note, the confirmation of the next Un-carrier move date was made as part of a wider announcement where T-Mobile disclosed its financial results for the second quarter of 2018. The most headline aspects of which was $7.9 billion in service revenue, and the addition of 1.6 million net adds. The latter represents the continuation of T-Mobile’s ability to see net adds in excess of one million in each consecutive quarter. Aspects which the carrier often suggests is a direct result of the Un-carrier moves it makes, and how consumers are looking for different and more novel options than what the ‘others’ currently offer.
