Amazon, today, refreshed two of its more popular tablet options – the Fire HD 8 and the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition. The Fire HD 8 Kids Edition sports all of the same specs as the Fire HD 8. That includes an 8-inch, 1280×800 resolution display, an octa-core 1.3GHz chipset, with 1.5GB of RAM, though this one only comes in 32GB of storage, unlike the Fire HD 8 which also has a 16GB option. There is also a micro SD card slot here for expanding storage on the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition, which is nice to see.
Where the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition really differs from the regular Fire HD 8 is in its features for kids. Firstly, it has a pretty nice case on it, with a thick bumper. This is to allow for kids to drop the tablet and not damage the tablet. Since that is going to happen, no matter how careful you are with the tablet. Amazon’s FreeTime is here, which basically gives the kids a slimmed down experience on the tablet, with apps and games that are tailored to their age group. The parents can decide what apps, games and even TV shows their child can watch, so that they don’t need to worry about what content the child is consuming. And today, Amazon also announced Freetime Unlimited is going to be available in Spanish soon. That’s a good thing considering there are a number of Spanish speaking kids in the US.
In addition to Freetime Unlimited, Amazon also has some pretty granular controls available on the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition. Allowing parents to limit their child’s screen time, and even give them more time on the tablet on the weekend – when there’s no school. Parents can set up age filters, choose to enable or disable the browser and much more. The Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablet is on sale now from Amazon in pre-order form. It will be launching on October 4. The price is set at $129, which is a bit more than the regular Fire HD 8, but you are also getting much more here.
