In short: Amazon announced a ton of new Echo devices today, including a new Echo Dot. The new Echo Dot comes with new fabric, so it fits in with the Echo that was announced last year, and also looks more stylish. It also has better audio quality than before. And that isn’t a huge surprise, since the original Echo Dot had some pretty terrible audio quality. The Echo Dot is about 70-percent louder this time around in addition to also sounding better. One of the bigger differences here, compared to the previous Echo Dot, is the fact that there are less far-field microphones. There are only four microphones here instead of seven, that means that the Echo Dot’s microphones are stronger than before.
Background: The new Echo Dot doesn’t look a whole lot different than the other “hockey puck” smart speakers out there right now. Though the biggest difference here is the rounded sides and it being wrapped in fabric. The Echo Dot has been super popular for Amazon, due to its low price, and it has also been bundled with a number of other products, so that many users were getting their hands on this product. And with the Echo Dot remaining at the same price of $49.99, you can bet that this new version will be just as popular.
Impact: The Amazon Echo Dot will cost the same as the original Echo Dot, at $49.99, and Amazon says that it will be available beginning next month. It is not coming to any new countries, but will be available in all countries that already have Alexa devices, which is a pretty long list at this point. The Echo Dot is going to be available in black and white (the white comes with a light gray fabric with the black coming with a darker gray fabric).
