Epic Games is currently in the process of expanding the availability of its Fortnite Android beta, with owners of the Google Pixel 2, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s, and several other smartphones reporting they were notified of the development via email earlier this week and are now able to play the hit battle royale game. As the title still hasn’t officially hit the stable channel, owners of any device Epic deems eligible to play it should expect inconsistent performance and a number of limitations, including a rendering cap set at 30 frames per second.
Fortnite’s Android launch is hence still chugging along but numerous issues continue to plague the gradual rollout that Epic is conducting. The company opted to partner with Samsung on the game’s release but not even the latest Galaxy Note 9 is currently able to run Fortnite in a consistent manner as optimization efforts are ongoing and the Android version of the battle royale hit still cannot compare to its iOS port. In the meantime, Epic started a public beef with Google over the latter’s bug disclosure policies, having criticized the tech giant for not providing it with more time to address a critical vulnerability of its Fortnite Installer app before publicly reporting the issue.
The game developer-publisher implied Google refused to assist it due to its decision to circumvent the Play Store with Fortnite’s Android release and hence denying it a 30-percent cut of any microtransaction revenue the title generates on Android devices. Google’s disclosure was in line with its policies and the company did not respond to Epic’s accusations to date. Fortnite is expected to hit the stable channel on Android by the end of the year, with the mobile game also being likely to receive support for physical controllers shortly thereafter. It’s currently unclear whether Epic will eventually bring the battle royale title to the Play Store, which some industry watchers speculated could happen.
