LG V40 Leak Hints At 19.5:9 Display, Casts Doubt On Triple-Camera Rumor

In short: A specification sheet said to belong to one variant of the LG V40 ThinQ (LM-V405N) Android flagship leaked online earlier today, corroborating some previous rumors about the device and casting doubt over others. In terms of the latter, the biggest takeaway is that the new leak casts doubt over widespread claims that the phablet will feature a triple-camera setup on the back and instead lists only two rear sensors – a 16-megapixel unit and another 12-megapixel module.

Background: Other specifications listed by the new leak largely coincide with previous reports about the LG V40 ThinQ; those include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chip, a 6.4-inch screen with a QHD+ resolution of 3,120 by 1,440 pixels amounting to a 19.5:9 aspect ration indicative of a display notch, and a dual-camera setup on the front featuring an 8-megapixel sensor and another 5-megapixel module. Compared to the last addition to the V series, the V40 ThinQ won’t come with a higher-capacity battery and will still be powered by a 3,300mAh cell, the same source suggests. The top variant of the device will sport 8GB of RAM and 128GB of flash storage, though the South Korean company is expected to offer at least one additional memory configuration at a more affordable price. Recent product certificates suggested around a dozen LG V40 ThinQ models are presently in the works, though most are likely to differ solely by band support.

Impact: The suggestion that the V40 ThinQ may not feature a triple-camera setup after all remains somewhat dubious as more credible sources claimed the opposite on several occasions over the last few months. Opting for a three-lens system would allow LG to differentiate its flagship offering this holiday season and be the second major manufacturer (after Huawei) to commercialize such a solution with a mainstream device. The final confirmation of the imaging system used by the LG V40 ThinQ will arrive on October 3 which is when the device is scheduled to be officially unveiled.
