In Short:OnePlus has started rolling out OxygenOS Open Beta 19 and Beta 17 updates to the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T, respectively. This new update brings Android security patch for September to both devices, while the company also optimized UI for its Weather application that comes pre-installed on both devices. On top of that, a number of optimizations and changes were made to the OnePlus Switch application. The company has added a manual connection method if the QR code method is not working or some reason. That app now supports backup and recovery for application data, which includes home screen, lock screen, and app layout. On top of that, a number of OnePlus Switch bugs were squashed, and support for more Android devices has also been added. It is worth noting that this update does not bring Android 9 Pie to either device, we’re still looking at Android 8.1 Oreo.
Background: OnePlus had released quite a few OxygenOS Open Beta updates to the OnePlus 5 and 5T, but Android 9 Pie has still not reached either device. That is not surprising, though, as the OnePlus 6 received Android 9 Pie quite recently, and that is the device that the company has been focusing on the most, as it is the latest and greatest phone it has to offer. The OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T are next in line, and they will probably get the update in the next couple of months, even though we still do not know when. This new OxygenOS Open Beta update does not bring any new features to the device itself, but that was to be expected, as the company is working on Android 9 Pie update.
Impact: The OnePlus 5 and 5T were both introduced last year, and the company is still actively supporting both phones, which is nice to see. This new update does bring the latest Android security patch to the table, and the next OxygenOS Open Beta update may actually bring Android 9 Pie to both phones, but we’ll see what’ll happen.
