In short: Google has slowly been rolling out dark modes for a lot of its apps, and now it looks like Google News is about to be the latest to get the dark mode treatment. A number of users on reddit and Twitter have stated that they have gotten this new dark mode on their devices, for the Google News app. It’s a dark mode, but not a true black mode, like you would expect Google to use if their new Pixel 3 smartphones are going to have OLED displays (would allow for better battery life). But it is a nice change, especially for those that do like to catch up on the news in bed, in the dark.
Background: Google has been testing out dark mode on a few other apps, including the Google Feed, which is now Discover. It shows its users that Google is looking to make a shift over to a darker interface, or at least giving users that option, which is something that Android users have been asking for quite some time. It isn’t actually rolling out just yet for Google News, but it appears that it will be pretty soon.
Impact: This feature is not yet available for everyone, but you can check the Settings in the Google News app to see if it is available for you. It will show up under the “General” section in the settings. It allows you to choose when to jump into Dark Mode. Whether it is always on, only on when the sun goes down or even just on when battery saver is on. The dark mode here is something that a lot of people are clamoring for right now, so hopefully Google doesn’t take its sweet time in rolling this feature out, and gets it out to everyone pretty quickly.
