Sony just unveiled the list of twenty games preloaded on the upcoming PlayStation Classic console, including a number of iconic and beloved titles such as Final Fantasy VII, Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, Rayman, Resident Evil Director’s Cut, Tekken 3, Twisted Metal, and more. The company also launched a new promotional YouTube video with gameplay snippets for all of the twenty games, which you can see below, and reconfirmed the console’s launch in the U.S. and Canada to take place on December 3.
Having been launched in 1994 to critical acclaim, the original Sony PlayStation remains one of the best-selling home game consoles of all time, with roughly 102 million units sold throughout its entire lifetime which spanned over no less than twelve years until it was discontinued in 2006. To this day it has only surpassed by its successor – the PlayStation 2 – in terms of sales figures with around 155 million units sold, while being closely followed on the third place by Nintendo’s most popular home console ever, i.e., the Nintendo Wii, with roughly 101 million units sold. Having said that, after Nintendo opened the floodgates for miniaturized retro gaming consoles with the release of the NES Classic Mini two years ago, it was only natural for Sony to eventually offer a version of its very first home game console to gaming enthusiasts who might feel nostalgic for some of the classic video games launched on the system, or new gamers who may want to experience these classic titles in a more modern package. And Sony had to pick from a very large list of video games for the PlayStation Classic, given that the original console was the home of thousands of titles shipped in the hundreds of millions worldwide. Having said that, it’s likely that some prospective buyers won’t find some of their favorite games preloaded on the Classic, but nevertheless, the choice of games seems solid for a retro miniaturized console of this type.
The PlayStation Classic will launch early December in the U.S. and Canada but launch dates for Europe and other regions are currently missing. In the U.S. the console will carry a price tag of $99.99 and the package includes the console itself, two USB classic controllers (no DualShock), and an HDMI cable. The unit will have a virtual memory card and it’s very likely that the memory card slots won’t be functional and are there just for the sake of maintaining the original design. As for future releases, depending on how the PlayStation Classic will be received, Sony could consider launching a PlayStation 2 Classic in the future but as yet there’s no official word on the matter. Nevertheless, the retro mini game console trend is still alive and since it seems to be constantly fueled by new releases, it could continue to spawn other miniaturized versions over the coming years.
