Sony Xperia XZ2 & XZ2 Compact Receiving Android 9 Pie Update

Sony is now rolling out the stable version of Android 9 Pie to the Sony Xperia XZ2 and the XZ2 Compact. This software upgrade brings several new features to the two smartphones, including the Adaptive Battery and the Adaptive Brightness functionalities. Both features take advantage of artificial intelligence to reduce the power consumption of the device. For example, the Adaptive Battery feature limits the resources allocated to apps that users do not regularly use. Meanwhile, the Adaptive Brightness functionality uses machine learning to adjust the brightness levels of the display accurately. The Android Pie update also introduces design changes to quick settings, notifications, and media controls, and it also includes Sony’s new camera application. The software upgrade also installs the October 2018 Android security patch to the handset, which resolves up to 26 different vulnerabilities discovered in the operating system.

It should be noted that one of the two devices receiving the update, the Xperia XZ2, has already received beta versions of the operating system as part of the Android P Developer Program. Aside from the Xperia XZ2 and the XZ2 Compact, Sony will reportedly upgrade four other smartphones to Android 9 Pie, which includes the XZ2 Premium, XZ1, XZ1 Compact, and XZ1 Premium. Previous reports mention that Sony will complete the rollout of the software upgrades by November 2018, although there are no specific dates available for the deployment of the software updates.

Sony unveiled both the Sony Xperia XZ2 and the Xperia XZ2 Compact back in February 2018, and these two devices are equipped with the Snapdragon 845 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal flash storage, which could be expanded using a microSD card. The rear camera of the two devices is equipped with a 19-megapixel sensor that can record 960fps slow-motion video at Full HD resolution, while the Advanced X-Reality technology automatically upscales SDR content to HDR. The Xperia XZ2 sports a larger 5.7-inch display and 3180mAh battery, while the Xperia XZ2 Compact comes with a 5-inch display and a 2700mAh battery. Even though Sony has started rolling out the software upgrade, it may take several days before all units receive the installation file.
