Samsung's New Patents Reveal Galaxy S10's Possible Design

It seems like Samsung submitted a new patent, according to a report from LetsGoDigital, and this patent could actually represent the design of the upcoming Galaxy S10. Samsung actually submitted a number of variations of this design at the Hague International Design System (a place where companies can apply or industrial design patents). If a patent gets accepted at the Hague International Design System, it’s automatically accepted in 70 countries around the world. It is also worth noting that the whole database is being managed by WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office), so submitting a patent here is more or less equivalent as submitting it at the WIPO. Each of the design variations that Samsung submitted have one thing in common, a camera hole in the upper-left portion of the display. The company actually submitted 50 different smartphone models as part of this application, some of which you can check out in the gallery down below. Some of these models have extremely rounded corners, some not so much, others have almost square corners, while come designs have curved displays on the sides, while some have curved displays on the top and bottom. Interestingly enough, Samsung did not submit any written material along with this patent / design, only images / sketches were submitted.

Interestingly enough, These designs with camera holes in the upper-left corner are not the only ones Samsung patented. Prior to that, on November 9 and October 26, Samsung actually sent a number of additional images / sketches to the Hague International Design System, Including smartphone designs that have two camera holes in the display, in the upper-right corner fo the display, which have a huge hole in the display at the top (not a notch), with cameras, sensors and an earpiece… and several additional designs that you can check in the gallery down below. That being said, design models are represented by a letter in the alphabet, starting with a letter “A”, and those designs go all the way to the letter “L”, while all of them can be checked out down below.

Background: Samsung has been a busy bee when it comes to submitting mobile device design patents. It was recently discovered that the company actually submitted a design that may bring a foldable tablet into play, a table which will sport a “double fold” design. One of its sides would fold over the center part of the display, while the other would do the opposite, so when folded, you’d still have access to one-third of its display, and could use that part of the display. On top of that, the company also seems to be looking into holographic displays, as one of its recent patents suggests that as well. The company had submitted a patent with the WIPO recently, and it details such a holographic display in the patent, which you read more about by clicking here.

Samsung had recently shown off its foldable smartphone during the Samsung Developer Conference, it showed off a demo device for the public, though its full design was obscured with a case which has extremely thin bezels, so it’s still a secret as to what the phone will look like, of course. The company is planning to introduce its first foldable smartphone in early 2019, though, the company’s execs have already confirmed that, and in addition to that, we’ll also see the Galaxy S10 announced. The company already teased its first smartphone with a display camera hole, the Galaxy A8s, so that phone may become the very first Samsung-branded smartphone to sport a camera hole in the display, and the Galaxy S10 may follow soon after.

As far as the Galaxy S10 is concerned, we already know that it will be fueled by the Exynos 9820 processor that got announced recently, at least in Europe, while Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8150 aka Snapdragon 855 will fuel it in the US and China. The Samsung Galaxy S10 may adopt one of the designs that are shown in this article, as the one with a display camera hole seems to be the most probable solution, even though some rumors suggested that the Galaxy S10 will sport a truly bezel-less display, which suggests no camera holes or anything of the sort, but that may be unrealistic at this point. The Galaxy S10 is expected to arrive in at least two variants, regular and ‘+’ models, even though some additional variants have been rumored as well, compact and “budget” models. The Galaxy S10 series will ship with Android 9 Pie out of the box, Samsung’s all-new One UI skin, and chances are all of those phones will ship with Super AMOLED displays, which will be different in size, while we’re also expecting to see at least 6GB of RAM on the Galaxy S10.

Impact: The Galaxy S10 is expected to represent a major redesign of the company’s Galaxy S lineup, the Galaxy S6 and S7 were quite similar in design, the same goes for the Galaxy S8 and S9, so the Galaxy S10 is expected to step away from that design, as Samsung does major redesigns every two years, basically. Whatever the case may be, the Galaxy S10 will probably not sport a display notch, and the company is expected to trim down those bezels even further, compared to the Galaxy S9. We will see at least two cameras on the back of the Galaxy S10 models, though different models may have a different number of camera sensors on the back, some may even ship with three cameras on the back, the Galaxy S10+ perhaps. We’re only guessing at this point, but as we are approaching the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, the design of the Galaxy S10 should become more and more apparent, as a ton of leaks will probably surface before the Galaxy S10 lineup gets announced, at least that was the case in the previous years. Those leaks will give us a really good idea as to what to expect out of Samsung, and even though the company still did not announce that the Galaxy S10 is coming, nor that it will get announced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019, that is probably what will happen.
